The Crown Hotel
In December 1957, Peter Walker, the Society’s Chairman took up the issue of the Crown Hotel, on the High Street, opposite the end of Church Street. There had been an inn on this site since before 1576 and at the time was the only good hotel serving meals in the Town.
The letter from its owners, The Cannon Brewery Company, made no mention of its historic or architectural merit. Chesham Urban District Council was considering rejecting the application to demolish it, but the County Council said that it would not support them if it went to appeal.
A lesson has been learned with hindsight, especially as the replacement building has been an eyesore for most since its completion.
